Hernia is a disease that occurs once the contents of the body cavity bulge out of the region where they are normally contained. The disease develops when there is an increase in pressure the residing abdominal cavity. This may be caused by obesity, chronic lung disease, straining during urination and presence of fluid in the cavity of the abdomen. The disease may also be caused mechanically by having incorrect posture, tight clothing, poisoning and improper weight lifting.

Hernia has many signs and symptoms which vary according to the stage of the disease. On the early stage, the patient has protruding structures which can be gently pushed back to their normal places. In a developing baby boy, a hole in his abdomen allowing his testicles to descend to the scrotum closes. For girls a similar opening exists although the ovaries fail to descend from the abdomen. The disease may also be visible when the baby is coughing or crying. In men it occasionally causes pain and swelling of the scrotum.

Words from our in House Expert:

dr.-dave-bordered.jpgDr. Dave States: A hernia is typically due to the rupture or the breakdown of the collagen system supporting the lower groin area or anywhere else that hernias appear.  Supporting good collagen and fibroblast activity in this area is needed to support this blow out.  Surgical intervention is the most common treatment, but there are bodywork styles that can slowly close this hole through scar tissue formation in this area although it is a slow process.
