Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is medical condition where both the stomach and the small intestine become inflamed. This often results in vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and pain.

In children these are generally caused by the rotavirus, where as in adults it is caused by the norovirus, bacteria and the Campylobacter. The transmission of this disease can occur due to contaminated water or badly prepared food.

The symptoms of gastroenteritis become visible within 12-72 hours of the intake of the infectious agent. If the cause is viral then the problem should get resolved in one week. For viral infection the symptoms include muscle pain, fever, headache and fatigue. If the stools are bloody then the chances are that it is bacterial infection and they may take several weeks to heal, they cause severe pain.

Children who are infected with rotavirus generally make a full recovery in 4-8 days, but if adequate care and medicines are not given then diarrhea may become persistent and may also lead to frequent dehydration.

In about 1% of the total cases seen, the patients get effected by the reactive arthritis following an attack by the campylobacter.

The diagnosis is often based on differential diagnosis and the dehydration rates.

To prevent this disease, the two available ways are vaccination and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

On the way to recovery you should take the medicines as prescribed by the doctors and re-hydrate yourself regularly.

Words from our in House Expert:

dr.-dave-bordered.jpgDr. Dave States: Chronic Inflammation typically starts in the stomach and deep into bowels.  Over acidification through activity of the body and the mind through diet and exercise cause this problem for most individuals.  It takes a long time for this to start but it works great to alkalize with apple cider vinegar and get good digestive enzymes working in the body.  Garden of life Primal Defense is a great one to balance this system.  Many other alkalizing and nutrifying agents can be found sitewide in regard to the gastric system.
