Cholera Definition

While cholera can result in watery diarrhea, it's the lack of quality drinking water in your diet that can bring about this disease. This is why outbreaks of this infection are more common in third world countries, where supplies of safe water are in short supply. That doesn't mean it is easily avoidable in wealthier countries, especially when natural disasters hit your area. Many services are then shut down, such as stores, as well as water and electricity. Imagine deep flood waters after a hurricane surrounding your house — and realizing it could be your lone source to quench your thirst. It is hard to believe you would go to such lengths, but others might not have a choice.

A clearer cholera definition is when bacteria attack your body, usually through your intestines, because of contaminated water. Advances in sewer maintenance and water quality in America have helped battle cholera cases. It can also occur through eating raw foods, such as oysters and mussels. With such a rapid loss of water through diarrhea, it is possible to dehydrate, and could lead to death.

You should always take a holistic approach to matters of gastrointestinal health. If you have any questions about the quality of the water you drink, consider first boiling it to kill off any possible bacteria.
